(June 28- July 1) ARTSTART:Safari to Africa Gr K-6

We are off to explore East and West Africa through the arts.  Learn drumming and create masks in the morning.  Then design your own pottery and wearable art in the afternoon. Plan to stay the whole day!  Family and friends are invited to attend our Thursday performance, where students perform, exhibit artwork, and share their learning. Morning Session    9 a.m.-noon   
Includes both of these 90-minute classes:
African Drumming-Patterns in Sound

Work with a master West African drummer and learn how to drum on authentic African drums, including the djembe.  Practice basic rhythmic patterns that have been passed on for generations, as you prepare to perform at our Thursday community celebration.

Masks-Sculptures of Sub-Saharan Africa 
Learn about the symbolism of the mask in African culture.  Create your own African mask using clay, cardboard, and paper mache. Then paint it with shapes and patterns based on authentic African designs.  Add raffia or a headband for the finishing touch.

Clay-From Vessels to Sculpture

Join our expedition to the Nile River Valley of East Africa. Canopic jars, the Rosetta stone, the key to unlocking the secret code of the Egyptian hieroglyphics, and miniature animal sculptures are the topic of this clay experience.  Learn about the importance of each of these objects to Ancient Egyptian life and create your own objects.

Wearable Art-African Designs
Learn about African design including the meaning of certain colors and shapes. Then working with an artist design and print patterns on cloth, weave with colorful yarns, create beaded and metallic jewelry, and other fashion inspired by African design.


Students may enroll for full or half-day:  Morning and/orAfternoon.  Each half-day session includes two 90-minute classes. Full-day students must bring a bag lunch; half-day students a snack. Register early-classes are limited to 15 students.
